2023 Interior Decorating Trends
So, here we are, already almost one month into the new year, and I am only now putting together my 2023 Interior Decorating Trends!!
Why? Well, long story short, I have just spent the last month overseas, enjoying lazy days by the beach and catching up with family and friends. However, during that time I have also spent quite a bit of time researching current trends so that I can give you my take on what I think you should be looking out for this year.
Clearly, the movement AWAY from minimalism continues into 2023, with interior decor across the globe reflecting our desire for connection, warmth and comfort more than ever. Colours are becoming bolder, prints more detailed, and furniture and accessories are shaped in interesting and unusual ways.
So read on for my thoughts on interior decorating trends in 2023.
Gothic resurgence
Perhaps because of shows such as Wednesday (which I loved) or because in a post-Covid world we are desperate for warmth and connection, the Gothic style is clearly seeing a resurgence.
This does not mean we need to start adding spooky spires to our homes or start worrying about bodiless hands running around the home (this is an Addam’s Family reference incase you are freaked out!).
Instead, it means that we are seeing the return of darker, bolder colours - jewel colours of course, but also black, the complete antithesis of white minimalism!
The style also sees a love for all things ornate - from golden objet d’arts to floral wallpapers or velvet curtains.
Coupled with darker toned wood features, and this look immediately creates warmth and comfort. It is also quite a sophisticated look.
How much of this trend you apply is completely up to you, and where you sit on the spectrum will have a large impact on the ‘feel’ of your home.
Florals
Not only does the floral look work with Gothic, but it is also a key component of another major trend. Called NanaCore, Grand Millenial Design and a raft of other terms, the floral cottage look is definitely back with a vengence.
This means we can expect an explosion of wallpapered walls, printed apolsteries and even some of nanna’s favourite Chintz!
This is a look that can both overwhelm and create huge amounts of warmth. My personal advice is to use with restraint. I for one have some gorgeous floral featured walls at home, but I have married them with restrained furnishings and dusted jewel colours. Sometimes less is more.
Curves
Curves in both furniture and home design continue to be on trend. All those of you who removed the 1970s wall arches from your homes are probably regretting that decision now!
Indeed, curved entranceways and recessed walls appear to be making a comeback.
However, this trend is also seeing a move towards curved furniture including sofas (I am eyeing one off myself), mirrors, benchtops and cabinetry. They offer a sense of coziness and closeness that more traditional straight edges do not.
Don’t forget that you can also apply to rugs, mirrors and bedheads.
Geometric Patterns
In keeping with the style trends already, mentioned, bold geometric shapes are increasingly popular.
From diamond shaded tiles, to gorgeous patterned cushions, this is a look that you can apply sparingly for a real pop.
Vintage
Again, in keeping with an overall movement away from minimalism, we are seeing more emphasis on unique vintage items.
Full of history and character, vintage items offer a real sense of personalisation to your home.
They don’t need to be expensive - in fact, I would argue that coming across a vintage item organically, either at the flee market or as a hand-me-down has much more meaning.
Pair some old curios found on a recent holiday with an old table handed down from your grandparents and you have the perfect combination of vintage.
Dining Rooms
Ok, this one sort of stands out from the others, but I think it is a really important trend to note.
In this post-Covid world, we are of course travelling more. But we are also loving the opportunity to entertain our family and friends at home once again!
As a result, we are investing more in gorgeous dining tables, chairs and statement lighting. Rather than using our tables are workspaces, we are moving back to using dining tables and dining rooms for their intended purpose! Entertainment and sharing!
In fact I am noticing a definite trend in home designs back towards separate formal dining rooms. As a child of the 80s, I approve :-)
How you develop the perfect dining room is up to you, but the current trends towards NanaCore and Gothic styling work well with this space as they make a feature of woodcraft (Gothic) as well as coziness and entertaining (NanaCore).
The new dining space is also a perfect spot for some vintage items - think mid-century modern drinks cart, or a beautiful piece of art.
Final words
As always, have fun with these suggestions, but also remember that while it’s nice to have some items and pieces that speak to current styles, there is nothing wrong with pursuing your own style path as well. If I have learned nothing else in life, then I have learned that fashion comes and goes!
