Get the Look - Maximalism

I always describe my interior decorating journey as BC and AC… That is Before Colour and After Colour.

Like many people, I too used to be obsessed with white. White walls, white cabinets, white textiles… You name it.

Then, in 2019, my husband and I decided to undertake a gut renovation of our main home in Australia.

Given what a big job it was going to be, we hired an interior designer. Easily the best decision we made.

Not only did I make a lovely new friend, but our interior designer introduced me to colour.

I can still recall the conversation. We were talking about kitchen cabinets and I kept saying that I wanted ‘everything white’. Thankfully she was able to convince me to introduce some colour and I selected the most gorgeous tiffany blue inspired colour. It was the right choice because our kitchen ended up being a state finalist in a major Australian kitchen and bathroom design competition, and my love of colour was borne…

Over the years, this love of colour has evolved and deepened to now also love a combination of patterns and colours. In other words, I have been evolving towards maximalism.

My timing couldn’t be better. If you have visited any showrooms, display homes or browsed a magazine over the last few years, you will see a definite trend towards maximalism. So what is it? And how do you create it in your own home?

Maximalism explained

Almost certainly a response to the lockdowns of Covid, people became looking at 4 white walls and bland decorations. They started to experiment with colour and design and so the seeds of maximalism were sown.

Maximalism is an audacious interior design style that celebrates the “more-is-more” mindset. It’s all about embracing bold patterns, vibrant colors, unexpected textures, and intricate details. Unlike minimalism, which favors simplicity and restraint, maximalism revels in abundance and personality.

Unique and Personal

Maximalism defies rigid rules. Each maximalist space is distinctive, reflecting the homeowner’s individual tastes and preferences. There’s no one-size-fits-all definition; it’s about being true to what you love.

Atmosphere and Fearlessness

Maximalism embraces the fearlessness of creating a space for items that bring joy. It’s about knowing there are no strict guidelines—if you like it, you buy it. Essentially, maximalism is decorating based on vibes.

Controlled Chaos

While some associate maximalism with a loud or chaotic environment, others take a more controlled approach. Options include patterned wallpaper, curated artwork, and pops of color. A true maximalist space blends modern and traditional elements, with layered accessories and decor.

Bold and Colorful

Maximalism thrives on full gallery walls, vintage knickknacks, and unconventional choices—whether it’s outlandish paint colors or one-of-a-kind furniture.

Creating a Maximalist look in your home

Maximalist decor is a vibrant and expressive style that celebrates abundance, individuality, and boldness. Here are some key elements of maximalist design:

Eclectic Mix

Maximalism thrives on diversity. Combine various design elements, eras, and cultural influences. Mix patterns, textures, and colors fearlessly. Think of it as a delightful visual cacophony.

Bold Colors

Say goodbye to neutrals! Maximalist spaces embrace rich, saturated hues. Think jewel tones, deep blues, fiery reds, and lush greens. Don’t shy away from using them on walls, furniture, and accessories.

Layered Textiles

Maximalism loves textiles! Layer rugs, throws, and cushions. Opt for velvet, silk, and brocade fabrics. Consider tapestries, fringed curtains, and embroidered pillows.

Statement Furniture

Choose eye-catching furniture pieces. Think ornate headboards, gilded mirrors, and plush sofas. Don’t be afraid to mix styles—vintage, antique, and modern can coexist harmoniously.

Gallery Walls

Maximalists adore art. Create gallery walls with an array of paintings, prints, and photographs. Overlap frames, mix sizes, and let your collection spill onto adjacent walls.

Collections and Curiosities

Display your treasures! Whether it’s vintage teacups, quirky sculptures, or antique globes, maximalism celebrates collectibles and oddities. Showcase them proudly.

Maximized Patterns

From floral wallpapers to geometric tiles, patterns are essential. Combine different motifs—stripes, chevrons, and paisleys—for an exuberant effect.

Opulent Details

Add opulence and drama. Crystal chandeliers, intricate moldings, and decorative trims elevate the space. Think tassels, fringe, and gold leaf accents.

Plants Everywhere

Greenery brings life to maximalist rooms. Lush indoor plants, hanging vines, and oversized potted trees enhance the ambiance.

Over-the-Top Accessories

Don’t hold back! Layer mirrors, sculptures, vases, and candles. The more, the merrier.

Summary

Remember, maximalism is about embracing your personal style and creating a home that reflects your passions and quirks. So go ahead—mix, match, and revel in the delightful chaos! 🌟

In summary, maximalism invites you to express yourself boldly, curate your space with passion, and revel in the richness of design. Whether you’re drawn to vibrant hues, intricate textiles, or eclectic collections, maximalism celebrates the art of living with flair! 🎨🏠✨
