Hollywood Glam - Get the Look
Also known as Hollywood Regency, this is a look borne out of the Golden Age of Cinema in the 1930s and one that we continue to see replicated in the foyers of luxury hotels across the globe.
In fact luxury is probably the best way to describe this style although other choice words include opulent, glamourous and bold.
Married with a touch of Art Deco (a style hugely popular in the 1930s), this is a look that can turn even the most average of homes into a luxury haven.
Make sure to read on for my tips on how to get this gorgeous look in your home.
Tip 1: Use velvet
Using velvet is key to this look and should be applied lavishly to key furniture items such as the sofa and occasional chairs. Indeed, adding a velvet sofa to any room immediately lifts it from the mundane and screams ‘glam!’.
Velvet finishes don’t have to be just for your seating, but can also be used for curtains and soft furnishings. Soft, but durable, velvet finishes diffuse light and add a little ‘je ne sais quoi’ to any home.
Tip 2: Metallic finishes
When was the last time you visited a high end hotel? Chances are you noticed a copious amout of gold, silver and even rose gold finishes.
Not only do metalic surfaces reflect light and create a little sparkle, they are a timeless look and one that is associated with wealth.
Apply metallic finishes where you can - for example choose a coffee table with gold legs, or a silver vase set. Let your imagination take control.
Tip 3: Reflective surfaces are central
Be it mirrored or glass topped items, choose furniture and decor that has a reflective surface wherever possible.
In both cases, the surface reflects light and adds an additional gleam to the room. Just make sure that you keep dirty little hands away from any glass surfaces or you will forever be cleaning!
Mirrors should also feature in any glam room. Make sure that they are large and placed in central locations - don’t hide them away on the back of a door. Better still, make sure they have gilted frames - fitting in perfectly with the metallic finishes theme we see throughout this look.
Tip 4: Add drama
This is a style that embraces drama - in fact it wraps itself in drama, quite literally!
Add bold patterns and textures - from a chinoisey wallpaper, to zebra print chair covers or curtains. Don’t be afraid. In the case of Hollywood Glam, less is definitely not more. Be tasteful in your application of course, but don’t hold yourself back either.
In addition to patterns and textiles, you might also consider beautiful glass lighting, or golden framed chandeliers. And don’t forget your floors. Consider faux fur rugs and throws to add an extra dollop of old world glamour to your home.
Tip 5: Embrace Colour (or not)
As my best friend once said to me, “embrace colour”. And when it comes to Hollywood Glam this is can be very true.
Hollywood Glam loves deep, bold colours - think ruby reds, saphire blues and emerald greens. But this is not to say that colour is compulsory. Indeed, many beautiful Hollywood Glam homes have an achromatic palette (black and white) with just a few pops of colour, including the ubiquitous gold.
At the end of the day, it is up to you how much colour you want to add. However, if you do go ahead with it, make it stand out! No pastels here!
