Designing to a budget -’Tween room make-over, Part 2

As you might remember from my recent post, Tween Room Makeover, I recently went to work on designing a room makeover for my best friend Jenny’s daughter, E (not her full name!)

E is about to enter her tweens and the bedroom that has suited her since toddlerhood is not quite to her liking anymore…

My previous post was focused around concepts and I will admit that I was not too fussed about budgets. Budget schmudgets!!!

However, Jenny has always been a cash savvy lady and wasn’t chomping at the bit to open a blank cheque book for her 10 year old’s room makeover. What a mean mummy ;-)

But seriously, I totally get it, and as much as I love my two kids, there is no way I am spending huge amounts of money on their bedrooms’ either.

So Jen and I had a chat about realistic budgets. I suggested a particular figure, she suggested another, and eventually we settled on $2000 (that’s Australian dollars).

With that in mind, I have re-visited my designs and created two more styleboards. Not a great deal has changed in terms of colours or styles of suggested furnishings. However, I have made sure to select items that fit within the brief… and mum and dad’s budget.

The first styleboard is pretty similar to the ones I posted in my previous blog, although, as I say, I have selected items that are within budget. I have also decided to include the white panelling currently in E’s room. Previously Jenny and I had talked about removing it. However, after some more discussion it was decided to retain them. One less cost!

The second image is a little different. In this case, I have also opted to keep the panelling, but have had a bit of fun and suggested painting them a shade of aqua. What do you think? Do you like it? How about that cat picture? I found it in a magazine and immediately wanted to include it in her room. As a fellow cat lover, I figured E would like it as much as me, particularly given it is surrounded by shades of aqua.

I am pretty happy with the final products. In fact, moving from concept to working within a budget was really fun and something that I am keen to do more of going forward.

I have used a combination of items from well-known Australian furniture shops as well as one of my new favourite online shops, Temple & Webster. I discovered Temple & Webster last year and think that they produce some lovely furniture at hard to beat prices (and no, I am not advertising for them!).

To shop the complete look, you can visit these stores at the following websites.

Lastly, for those of you who love a 3d render image as much as I do, here are a few gratuitous pictures of an updated render I did for the room, including the white panelling.
